My belief that Music is Good Medicine (MIGM) goes all the way back to my childhood. Ever since my mother first put a ukulele in my hands at the age of 4, this magical instrument has been a positive force in my life – helping to steer me away from drugs, violence and other negative influences. It fueled my passion for music, which has helped me to develop in mind, body and spirit...

The Hawaii Youth Symphony recently held an essay contest which featured contestants from three different categories. MIGM's participation in this contest featured Jake Shimabukuro as a judge, as he would personally read all the entries. We were so glad to see how music influenced the essays in so many ways. It really is amazing how music can create a passion for the youth of today all the while setting up future goals and the chance to experience new possibilities. It was truly and honor to be involved with such an inspiring, motivational and youthful contest.
MIGM is pleased to announce the top winners from each of the three categories. And the winners are...

MIGM and Jake Shimabukuro had a busy month to kick off the new year. We started off with a very cultural and entertaining visit to the Kuakini Health Care System Senior Care Center. Following that we made a trip out to Wahiwa's Leilehua High School where Jake would conduct a workshop and a performance.. Then, Jake would break the silence rule at the Hawaii State Library. To finish off the week Jake would express a deep and meaningful message to the students of the The Pacific Buddhist Academy at the Hongwanji Temple.
